Keratoconus is a condition that results in thinning of the cornea causing the cornea to distort, producing high levels of irregular astigmatism that can be difficult to correct with glasses. Although early stage Keratoconus may be corrected with glasses or contact lenses, as it progresses, vision will need to be corrected using a gas permeable contact lens.

Keratoconus usually starts during teenage years and gradually worsens. It is thought there is a link with asthma and hay-fever. New Zealand has one of the highest rate of Keratoconus in the world.

At Highbury Optometrists, we use a digital corneal topographer to assess the shape of the cornea. This allows to accurately fit the correct shape contact lens. It also aids in monitoring any progression of the condition.

We specialise in fitting of Keratoconus with gas permeable rigid contact lenses. Often the cost of these lenses are funded by a health board subsidy.

New laser surgical procedures are also available to correct and slow down progression. We can advise whether these procedures may be suitable and refer you to the appropriate surgeon.
